SUMMARY:FAAYO Provides Psychosocial Support to People Living with Heart Disease in Rural Uganda
DESCRIPTION:Katusiime Nuru is a mother of two\, living with RHD in rural Wakiso District\, Magudu Bussakya Village. Nuru was diagnosed with RHD in 2015 following chest pain\, a discomfort she had felt for a long time. Nuru used herbal medications and painkillers to treat her pain. \nOne evening\, Nuru was seated on a chair at home when she collapsed and was rushed to Kayunga Hospital. From there\, she was referred to the Uganda Heart Institute in Kampala for treatment. Nuru’s condition did not improve until 2015\, when she had a balloon valvuloplasty performed at the Uganda Heart Institute to repair her damaged heart valve. Since then\, Nuru’s life has stabilized with minor health challenges. \nNuru lives with her children at her late mother’s home\, where she inherited land when her mother passed. Nuru does small-scale crop farming as a source of income to enable her to take care of her children and her medical treatment. She grows maize\, cassava\, bananas\, and green vegetables on her plot. However\, due to a lack of capital and formal skills\, she has low returns from the garden. \n \nJust like many PLWRHD\, Nuru’s financial challenges lead to poor treatment choices. For example\, Nuru sometimes misses hospital appointments and skips her medication for some days to save money. She believes that social and financial factors are the essential contributors to the successful management of RHD for an individual. Nuru believes that if PLWRHD are empowered with improved vocational skills and supported economically\, they can overcome many of their health challenges. \nEmpowering PLWRHDs who can act as patient role models drives healthy change for many.

SUMMARY:Community Outreach at Bujumbura Hill\, Hoima District
DESCRIPTION:FAAYO partnered with the Kids Support Centre\, CBO to hold a heart disease community awareness event on Sept 22\, 2022 in Bujumbura Hill\, a rural community in Hoima District. Volunteer nurse Julian and community volunteer William assisted Christine and Ruth in conducting the event. Over 85 people were in attendance. The sessions involved a review of Reach’s Community Awareness RHD flipchart which generated much conversation among the attendees. One attendee disclosed that they had stopped taking prescribed medications for a heart condition. Others talked about taking herbal treatments for their sore throat symptoms. One young boy described possible signs of RHD. \nThese discussions created the opportunity for FAAYO members to spread health messages to always seek proper treatment and always take and finish full doses of prescribed medications from healthcare personnel – even if they feel better after the first days of taking the medicine. Attendees were encouraged to visit the hospital to see a physician if inflamed tonsils and fevers are persistent. \n  \nOutreach Photos \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:OUTREACH ACTIVITIES DECEMBER 2023
DESCRIPTION:Alinaitwe Eunice is a final year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Project Planning and Management at Ndejje University. Eunice has a passion for helping others. In December\, Eunice offered to support FAAYO in its patient community outreach activity\, which we called ‘’SHARING LOVE.”. This was an activity of reaching out to patient families affected by heart disease to provide psychosocial and emotional support. We also provided general home-use goods such as food and soap. We extend great thanks to Eunice who funded the purchase of these basic necessities to create smiles in our HEART COMMUNITY. Eunice believes that even with a little\, you can make a positive impact and change lives. \nAlinaitwe Eunice \nPatience \nPatience is an 11-year-old girl who lives in Hoima. She started falling sick in October of 2023 with serious signs of joint swelling\, swelling of the body\, and a fast heartbeat. A sickle cell test came back negative; then she was diagnosed with pneumonia because of her fast heartbeat and abnormal breathing. In February 2024\, Patience was referred to Mulago Hospital after doctors suspected a heart problem. Finally\, Patience was diagnosed with Rheumatic heart disease at the Uganda Heart Institute. Patience was started on treatment and referred for surgery out of the country. That surgery is unfortunately delayed\, and Patience waits. \n \nGrace\, Wakiso District \nGrace was born with a heart defect. At the age of 2 and a half years\, she travelled to India for heart-saving surgery. Now she is almost 4 years old\, very strong\, and living a normal life like any other kid. Health information about how to care for a child after\nheart surgery still remains insufficient as parents put restrictions on the child because of many myths and misconceptions after surgery—a gap Faayo is working hard on to ensure parents are empowered with the information they need to raise their children with confidence to lead a normal life. \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Grace\, Wakiso District\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nFAAYO works hard to offer continuous psychosocial support to families affected by heart disease—both congenital and rheumatic heart disease. We want to bridge the knowledge gap and promote healthy lifestyles through health education and empowerment for families and communities. We are currently focused on the rural areas of Wakiso and Hoima Districts\, reaching out to families affected by CHD and RHD by conducting community awareness campaigns. We need your support for our work through partnerships and donations. If you are interested in partnership opportunities to help us support the heart community in the rural areas of Hoima and Wakiso please email us at faayocommunityheart@gmail.com with Partnership Inquiry in the subject line. We look forward to hearing from you!
